New Helmet System

06 May 2012

This helmet system could have many uses, such as for gunners in the hatch.  But as one of the most experienced and smartest vets I know told me this morning, most troops will not want to wear it until they see a buddy lose part of his face.

(Note: I am not endorsing this system, but acknowledging.  I've not seen it in person.)

This looks like it could make a big difference. I suppose anything would be an improvement on the almost non-existent facial protection currently available.

I would be interested to see how this affects verbal communication and how hot it is to wear for long periods of time.

Much like wearing a full faced motorcycle helmet instead of a half shell, it's not as comfortable but beats having your jaw ripped off.

That full face variant looks like it'd be hotter than hell, especially with the visor. Full face helmets work for motorcyclists because they can direct a flow of air through them during hot weather. A helmet is needed that would allow you to force a light layer of water onto your scalp and maybe forced air circulation for evaporative cooling.

There's no way you can aim down a sight and wear full face protection.... Only good for top cover...

Maybe a small air conditioning unit that envolepes the face when put on the futuristic soldier's helmet ?

Not a smart way to mount it. That way it'll be impossible to use at night, at least if you want to use your NVGs, which should have priority. I can't believe they didn't just add some sort of strap going to the back of the helmet, that way you could've doubled the time you could use it each day.

I started to reply that you can still wear NODs with it but then I noticed the pics on the web site showing NODs attached had the visor attachment removed. hmmmm....

I also noticed that it's open in the back. If you're facing away from a blast, won't that contain the blast and cause nasty injuries that wouldn't have occured without the mask? And how do you look down properly when the mask collides with the trauma plates in your body armour? And how do you not become a heat casualty with that thing on in Afghanistan? I think they're just overdoing the protection bit with that thing.

Making the helmet big & bulky ? Why not make the soldier's helmet of a different material and resistance enough to the dangers of war like bullets, fragments, brick shattering etc. Lightweight, not bulky and fits like a glove. Right now this may be what we can do at this point in time. Bulky & heavy and hot. I am concerned about human breath fogging up the field of vision especially when running in pitched battles. May need to go back to the drawing board a few times. For now this is the best at this point in time ?
