Michael's Dispatches

Not I

19 June 2012

Through the years there has been a constant barrage of people misquoting me.  They might say, “Last week on CNN you said…”  And I was in some war zone at the time and nowhere near a television interview.  But then it gets picked up, and bloggers do the he-said, she-said, and soon it becomes an erroneous article of faith that I said or wrote something.

Most times, these incidents appear to be honest mistakes.  On other occasions, people have set up fake websites pretending to be me. Just this week, Facebook was alerted to a page using my photo and my name, and the imposter posted as though he were me.  A fake Skype account exists using my name, and it is very similar to my genuine account.  One can only speculate about how much mayhem has been attempted with masquerading email accounts.

Consider this recent message:

“Hey Michael, I read one of your articles and you seemed pretty against Noam Chomsky.  I’m puzzled cause I thought you two would get along.”

Well, this is perplexing. I have never written a word about Professor Chomsky until just now.  This is an example of false attribution.  It may have been accidental, but I do not know.  Bottom line, I did not write this:

Michael, sorry about this. An unhappy mark of effectiveness!

Sad to see someone so threatened by Professor Chomsky as to fabricate such an article in your name. (And what a terrible Michael Yon impression, it was more like parody.)

Have to agree with Toaster. Who ever wrote this drivel has not even come close to the quality of writting I have seen you deliver.

I'm sure I'm not the first to note the egregious errors in the "Elements of National Power" the author lists. Hell, if someone can't be bothered to actually read a JP or Google DIME/FIL (four or seven, depending upon the model) then why waste time reading further?

Mike, FYI. Similar things happened to USA Today reporters. Source was tracked down to a government contractor with a contract for information operations. See smear campaign against Tom Vanden Brook of USA Today http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/apr/20/usa-today-smear-campaign
Again source was actually tracked down.

If you follow the link to instapundit you can see that it was originally attributed to Michael TOTTEN (another milblogger).

Obviously there was an error made in the blog "elements of power", but I don't think it was nefarious.

The Fake Mike Yons of the world should pay the real Mike Yon licensing fees.

That said, at least this piece was not horridly written. Just a bit florid (and not Mike Yon-ish at all).

I mean, "Delusional Leftist Meme" Bingo?" Come on.
