Moon over Afghanistan

15 October 2011
Nimroz Province, Afghanistan

This image was made several months back in Kabul, I believe.  The moon looks similar these nights out here near the Iranian border.

Each evening, I wonder if the military will take seriously the deficiencies in our medical evacuation policies in Afghanistan.  Lives of service members are being sacrificed due to poor military policymaking.

If you have not read RED AIR, please do, and forward it far and wide.

Have a great weekend.

Excellent shot Michael, what photography equipment do you mostly use while out on a mission?

Also congrats on Red Air - I saw it on Breitbart.com so it has received some significant distribution.

    thank you

I know for a fact the Medevac crews will go anywhere anytime wx permitting. It's nice to have a gun escort but thats what it is ...nice...not necessary. By the way..read "Kaboom" if you get a chance...worthwhile and sorts out why the best are leaving.

Hey Mike, great shot of the moon there. Sometimes I wonder if you've gone off the deep end regarding some of the things you've reported on, but when I look back on them some time later with 20/20 hindsight, I see that you were right all along, and sometimes that's kind of scary. Keep up the good work.

The Red air story is dreadful, but (unfortunately) necessary. Thank you.

I've just finished a book called 'Sweating the metal', you probably know it. Although the book was from the UK perspective of IRT responses, I naturally thought that the US would have the same policy. Obviously not. Sigh...

Umm, because that's where the Taliban are being trained. They sneak back & forth over the Pakistan border but were getting trained in camps in the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan. You remember, Taliban & the World Trade Center?

No Shea doesnt know about 9/11 he doesnt grasp how the country is setup and wild it is. That if you want to hide you can. Sadly this is the American mindset of today. Less and less care enough about their land to die for what it stands for

    Michael,

I have forwarded the Red Air article to a friend of mine, Col. George Aucoin, chief of staff, at 29 Palms, also to Sargent Major Bellis of the 2nd Marine Corp air wing Cherry Point. Most importantly to my Congressman, REp. Walter Jones, 3rd District North Carolina, where both Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point are located. Rep. Jones was one of just a few Republicans opposed to the War in Iraq. Jones is also a champion of veterans of ALL wars.

I will follow up with Congressman Jones and anyone else reading this might also contact him.

    Hi all,

Is there a petition already out about the "RED AIR" issue? Or does one need to be started?

We are in AFGHANISTAN because the country is setup in such a way that it makes it easy for say a group of people to train and prepare to send people out the do something crazy like I don't know blow up a ship, maybe an embassy, THIS is WAY out there but who knows Fly airplanes into buildings.... right I know that would never happen but anyways its a wild country with almost no leadership that reaches beyond major cities.
Its a political pawn being used by countries in the region.

See denying people that want power to kill people for no reason ( they say for Islam but that isnt the reason), make women into less than animal, throwing acid on people, killing them for showing a little skin, flying kites, listening to music, watching TV, or anything. Those people need something to rally their followers. Unfortunately hate for another country or way of life is a great thing to use. If you cant see that. I pity you. And 9/11 will happen again and I hope someone you love isnt jumping out of a tower on national TV

I sent the RED AIR message to both of my Senators and my Congressman. I also sent it to the Chairs/Co-Chairs/Ranking Members of both Senate and House Subcommittees on Defense Appropriations. Hopefully, something will change. This policy has been in effect at least since Viet Nam. It needs to change.

I also have contacted my Senator by email and called his Wahington D.C office today with links to Mike Yon's website and specifically, his RedAir dispatch.

I hope others will do the same.

I didn't know where to leave this comment as I have been reading several posts. I am subscribing to this kick ass blog. Did you know that you are mentioned in the top 10 military and veterans blogs?

I'm a Marine veteran. I was one the first Marines ever in country. I went over with the 15th MEU in the longest amphibious raid that the Marine Corps has ever done.

I blog a little too. My project can be found here: Veteran's Guide I would appreciate any input you have and let me know if you would like to guest post on it.

    Semper Fi!
