General Petraeus: Unfounded rumors

16 February 2011

Just got this email from Geoff Morrell, Press Secretary for Secretary Robert Gates:

"Despite some sensational speculation by one of the London papers, I can assure you General Petraeus is not quitting as ISAF commander, but nor does he plan to stay in Afghanistan forever. Obviously he will rotate out at some point, but that point has not yet been determined and it will not occur anytime soon. Until then, he will continue to ably lead our coalition forces in Afghanistan."

from my seat General Patreaus has never been part of any U.S. victory at arms... This country has not won a war in nearly over years... Why should we look to Patreaus for anything other than being able to do a whole bunch of push ups in a minute and collecting a pension. Show me his value, show me his win...

Wars aren't always won with skill in arms. Some wars are about winning the people's hearts. From what I've heard and read, it seems as though Petraeus is trying to do exactly that. This isn't an easy war, and one person alone is not going to solve it. Do not presume to think you can blame the outcome on one person.

Yeah...Right... Just like Steinbrenner telling the Press that Billy Martin would continue to be the Yankee Manager for the rest of the Year - the day before he canned him...This reminds me too much of a guy that micromanaged a war in the Soviet Union in 1942...wouldn't listen to the Genherals - only HE knnew how to fight the war....and lost. That's MY rulin'....

I just emailed to General Petraeus's office asking for a direct answer. Will be unfortunate if he leaves. Incredible leader and General.

Gen. Petraeus IS the right man for the job at hand. "W.Sam" doesn't know what or who the hell he's talking about. Idiot can't even spell. The good general will go down in the history books as one of the greatest military leaders in our nation's history.

How short sighted are some of you? Do you have collective short term memory loss. I clearly remember the 101st AB being commanded by Petraeus in 2003 and kicking ass in the invasion. I also clearly remember him being there during the surge. Seems like we did OK on that one also. I was there both times. Many commentators were not.

General Petraeus is a great man, a great leader and an excellent general. Just give him all the tools he needs and he will win. Michael, you are doing a great job too. You are this war and this generation's Ernie Pyle. Keep up the good work and stay safe.

I think this is more in the vein of a thinly veiled warning from the administration for Gen. Petraeus not to forget who put him where he is.....and Michael, your work is extraordinary. Your dispatches are the highlight of my e-mail. I have passed along your URL to many friends.

learn... Patraeus is the right man for stalemate and stagnation, another desk jockey general... wearing boots and singing songs and doing push ups for the cameras... hearts and minds??? I've heard that before; it didn't work then and it is not working now. Join the Peace Corp not the Army if that's your plan... And please stop with the cult of personality, he's losing HUGE. Realize the limits and proper uses of a modern army or we will keep repeating this horrible waste.

As I recall, General Washington was criticized for not winning. Importantly, he stayed in the field; stayed the course until victory at Yorktown. This Country is fortunate to have General Petreaus leading its war against terror on the battlefield in Afghanistan. We have not depended for our survival more at any other time in our history since Washington led our forces.

Is this the Geoff who on page 268 of Bob Woodward's book, Obama Wars, was so upset with Petraeus when he appeared on CNN for a wounded warrior on veterans day 2009, he questioned Petraeus's public affairs officer with "what the F..k." and "You Motherf..ker." to his answer. And McChrysal gets fired for someone else saying "Bite Me." ?
Like many in Washington, they get a pass while the warrior is held to a higher standard.

General my a**e, a war, a joke. Today, I have witnessed what passes for an education in our public schools, middle schools, high school and university in America, I walked the street of our cities and seen the wanton need of our communities. Everyday I see the damage to our homes, towns, cities, the states and this Nation by the onslaught of illegal immigrants invading this country - America. And, I can see what that is costing every working American. Every year in America (Department of Justice Statistics) in excess of 25,000+ Americans are killed by illegal immigrants in this America - 15,000+ by automobile accidents involving illegals immigrants most illegals with no licensees to drive - no insurance - most can't not read English; 10,000+ Americans are killed the victims of violent crimes done by illegal immigrants in America. My point - end this war and get our troops home. The billions of dollars wasted conducting this war are needed in America for Americans. The real invading enemy to America are in this nation already.

There is a chance with the upturn in the economy of this nation and the Muslim disruptions in the world, our American troops will become stranded in a foreign land and this nation will not be able to support or bring home our troops. Afghanistan wants a war, Pakistan wants to play at war, Iran wants to cause problems and wants a war - my war(s) would be over in with any of these fourth rate countries and all in 14 minutes, no American troops exposed to danger and their will be no worries about winning the hearts and minds. My Iraq war would of been over in 14 minutes and every Arab nation would forever after curbed their ways. Today, in 50 of the 190 countries of this world Muslims are the root of all trouble. Time to put a stop this violence before it comes to America. My war in Iraq would have cost only a few million dollars, not the trillions lost to the effort. There would be no problem from Iraq afterward, there would be few Iraqis left to worry about and perhaps the few remaining will see the penalty paid for their ways of thinking and would build anew respecting forever after the peoples of every other nation.

I hope, in a time America needs healing and protection we let lose the dogs of war, end this game, end this war and bring our troops home. Pakistan, you have hours to produce Osama or as George Bush stated, you will pay the price for harboring this terrorist criminal. Afghanistan, level every city and town and let the survivors start again; Iran you stop nuclear activities today, give up all military equipment to wage war or your country will be wiped off the face of this earth, every city, town and village. That is how you fight a war, not these stupid immature holding and police actions wasting billions and billions and billions of dollars our own country and our children need for education, food and shelter.

End these wars - bring our soldiers home, let them cleanse America of the invading illegals in America and let's look at invading Mexico, protect our borders, chase the Muslims from this country and clean up Mexico by eliminating their government who preys on their own people by keeping their people poor and uneducated.

I realize I will bring about condemnation for my views, Mr. Yon, stop worrying about the peoples and children of these lesser nations and start worrying about the children in this nation - America. Children here are going hungry, children here are getting a very poor education, kids here are on the streets with no homes, parents out of work, some abandoned to the horrors of the streets and all the time we are wasting billions in other foreign nations. General Petraeus as a general is a joke, generals wage wars in the protection of their nation. All I see is a general baby sitting our troops applying band aids unable to conduct war awaiting the commands of an inept commander in chief who has already demonstrated to the world he is a joke upon the world as well. Michael Yon come back to America and help the children of our nation that require all our attentions today. I would hope also start speaking up against this joke of an worldly ignorant commander-in-ch ief, start looking at the Americans killed by illegals in our home land and who will soon killed again be killed by the growing Muslim threats in our cities and towns. And all this time, American soldiers are being killed when not one American soldier had to be exposed to danger front or war.

That article in the Telegraph did set me wondering, so thanks Michael for sorting this out. Petraeus is as well thought of in Europe (or even more so) than in the US. Managing the NATO crowd is prolly more difficult that managing the war and I don't think we have a general officer as capable of both waiting for orders....

Jaime, I agree that illegal aliens are a scourge on our country. We need to take action to seal the borders and eliminate all the incentives that entice illegals to flaunt our laws. Its good to see leftists like yourself finally own that fact. I find it ironic, though, that you try to adopt one conservative position to justify undermining a more important one.
That being said, you've got your wires crossed about the operations in Afghanistan. Better to kill the bastards there than to have them kill here. Engage the enemy as far forward as possible.
Illegal aliens don't conduct coordinated purposeful attacks on US citizens. They conduct individual acts of lawbreaking and should be handled by law enforcement. There are plenty of law enforcement agencies, personnel and money to do the job if our government once again decides its their job to enforce our existing laws.
You went on a pretty nice screed there about the state of our educational system the "wanton need" in our communities, etc. Why don't you address your concerns where they belong to your state and local governments. All those items you mention are, Constitutionall y, the business of the several states. The federal government is violating the Constitution to provide funding for almost anything outside the military. The war against global Islamic terrorism is one of the few legitimate activities in which the government is currently engaged.
Your "social justice" comments and agenda are unrelated to the protection of American citizens from foreign enemies and have no place in a discussion on the qualities of the general commanding the troops who are protecting your misdirected rear from all those who want to blow you to tiny little bits.

I know General Petraeus did his duty and answered the President's call . . . but given the rules of engagement our troops have to work under, and given that General Petraeus is not allowed to win the war, I'm surprised he already quit in disgust and made a public stink about it.

I have to agree with Jaime on most of his concerns. We most certainly do need to worry about America first. Secure our borders. Rid America of the invading illegals. Fix our very poor education system. And as Ernest said: General Petraeus is not allowed to win the war in Afghanistan. Just as our general's were not allowed to win the war in Vietnam. He is doing as well as he can given the rules he has to work with. Should we be there in the first place? Not until we take care of America first. War has become the worlds biggest business. The military industrial complex has grown beyond control. President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned the nation about this very thing in his farewell address. Had we only listened maybe America would not be in such bad shape as it is today.
Michael, as always you are a rare jewel among all the worthless rocks that report the story of our troops. Please stay safe and keep up the excellent job. I've bought your books and donate when I can afford to. If anyone has not read Michale's books, you are missing out on some of the best writing out there.
