Gary Sinise to Continue Long March

Gary has been supporting troops for more than two decades not just in word, but in a long stream of deeds. Our troops post his photos on headquarters walls in Iraq and Afghanistan. I recall during the darkest days of the Iraq war, Gary Sinise and Laura Hillebrand were helping big-hearted American donors to send millions of dollars worth of supplies to Iraqi kids. During stints between the war, I even flew out to Kansas City just to visit the warehouse of Operation Iraqi Children, and there were pallets upon pallets of those same supplies that I had been seeing soldiers distribute to smiling Iraqi kids. Americans at home were a big part of relieving the plight of those children, and helping turn the war around, and Gary and Laura were important “go betweens.”
And Gary continues his quest to help the troops. He continues a global journey to entertain troops who are away from loved ones, often traveling into the wars, or in bases around the world. I asked Gary yesterday to send his upcoming schedule of his “Lt. Dan Band.” Even I had no idea how busy he stays.

But only the public gigs are listed there. Not the base shows. So I asked Gary for some of the base shows and he sent this:

Sinise alone to Afghanistan June 14 -June 20.
Band tour to Korea/Okinawa June 21 - July 5th.

· 10 years agoHe is the epitome of a good man. God has a special place for him. He walks the walk.
Next time you talk with him, can you ask him to do something at Fort Huachuca, Sierra Vista, Arizona? I'd sure love to go see him. He'd have a helluva turnout, what with the Post, and all the PGR members down here. Why don't you come, too? lol I'd love to meet you, Michael. I loaned your book to a friend of mine, who took it with her on a trip back east. She was so impressed, and told me at every airport she'd go up to anyone in uniform blubbering away, showing them your book, and thanking them for what they're doing. And like all of these humble heroes, they'd look at her like what the heck, this is our job. Anyway, that's what I get from them all the time. Thank you, Michael. -

· 10 years agoWhat aren't listed (because he does it without any publicity or fanfair) are his frequent visits to the amputee recovery ward at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. he just drops in every month or so to offer encouragement to the patients there. He sat quietly with my son, Brandon, for 10-15 minutes, just asking questions and listening. He has a remarkably calming, almost shy, personality when he is with the injured troops there.

· 10 years agoI wonder how much of this comes out of his own pocket?!?! With a son in Baghdad, I for one really appreciate all that he does. Out of all of the Hollywood celebs whose movies I will no longer support, Gary Sinise is a breath of fresh air. He stands head and shoulders above us all. Hooah!

· 10 years agoYou scared me there for a second, Michael. Your email subject line reads "Torture and Lt. Dan"!!! I had a hard time imagining how those two things could be related -- especially since I've seen the band in action [they're fantastic -- a great show, fun for all ages], and have admired the actor in roles from Steinbeck to Houston-we've-got-a-problem. Glad to know it was just a random news coupling.
Gary is a great American who has almost single-handedly (he and maybe half-a-dozen others) shouldered the burden once carried by Bob Hope and a small army of patriotic Hollywood stars who didn't hesitate to give their all for the troops and their country. The presidential medal was entirely too low-profile for the kind of kudos Gary Sinise deserves. Everybody should run, don't walk, to get your tickets for a Lt. Dan Band concert. -

Would love to know if he comes through Landstuhl on one of his overseas trips. Any way to find out?

· 10 years agoAlways loved him as an actor and it is good to know he is a good man also, I wish there were more like him in this country, never mind Hollywood.

· 10 years agoI am wife to one of the best NCO's in the Army (well, as long as I am saying it, he IS the best but I digress). Just seeing what you all have done at other posts around the world, as well as the families in the theatre of war warms my heart. I would humbly ask that you consider a show for the Arctic Warriors up here in Alaska. Many of our guys are gone right now and my husband will be very soon but many of their spouses and children are back here, waiting for their safe return.
Thank you for all that you do. You serve right along with some of the very best our country has to offer -
