Brexit shocked Germany and the rest of Europe

[A quick note from Michael]

This is unbelievably huge and complex. Many people already are blaming the British. Especially the English are to blame, they think.

But this is not their fault. This is the fault of the EU. British have been saying for years that they are unhappy, and they were ignored. They were taken for granted.

They do not like to be taken for granted.

They were shouting at the top of their lungs while smug Eurocrats ignored them.

And now, leadership across Europe is in shock that Brexit actually passed. It seems none of the major leaders or Eurocrats expected the referendum to pass.

Bookies were giving up to 9:1 odds that UK would not leave EU. 9 to 1! Just yesterday media were citing this as evidence that Brexit would not pass. They were citing bookies as evidence!

How could they not see this coming?

I have not lived in Europe for years, yet could see it coming. Of course I did not know if it would pass, but for months I have been publishing about Brexit. If I thought the chances of Brexit were tiny, I might have posted once about it, but I published dozens of times about Brexit. Dozens.

And now the EU is numb with shock, calling emergency meetings, calling for calm.

The EU is almost certainly mortally wounded.

How this plays out is anyone's guess, but when the smoke clears, the EU is probably dead. UK shot an arrow straight through the EU heart. EU already is staggering and bleeding just hours after Brexit. Markets are in turmoil, and no doubt many investors will be looking elsewhere, such as to Asia.

Eurocrats did not listen to the British. A lesson for everyone, in countries around the world. Listen to the people. They are not peasants. They are enlightened people.

This is not the fault of the British. They warned for years and years, and now this. Goodbye EU.

    Hope this is a wake up call to the Eurocrats, but probably not. Easier to blame the Brits than blame yourself.

        Well, I can't speak for Valerie, but I for one am certainly supporting Trump. It's either that or a lieing con artist running a money-laundering racket while putting national security at risk.

        Mike...your comment is duly noted although hardly appreciated. And Britain is doing better with your leaders???? ..all one has to do is wake up and look around at the boneheads worldwide leading good people to less rights and poverty as they line their own pockets and realize we should ALL be so fortunate (especially in Jolly Ole England) to have a Trump fighting for citizen's well being!. By the by...look at yourself and please explain where is the infamous British eloquence and diplomacy and tolerance????

    The same thing is going to happen here in the US after November, if we do not allow Billary to be elected. Its the fault of liberal leftist governments who have fostered unrestricted muslim immigration and economic policies which make the working class pay for it. Communism and Islamism should stay in their own countries. We don't need to import it here to see if maybe it will work, we already know it doesn't.

      I am not in favor of their resettlement here, but this is an absurd claim. Do you even have a _verifiable number_? And remember, the data can't be from ICE - they're part of the government and can't be trusted, can they?

        The estimated number of Muslims in the U.S. is 3.3M according to PEW Research.
        Using the 1% that are estimated to be radicalized, that gives 33,000 potential jihadis in the U.S. If 10% support their efforts, they have a base of 330,000 supporters. However, polls show that support is around 25% or 825,000. If the radicalized were to be organized into 10 person cells, 3,300 cells.
        I don't want that in my neighborhood running around.
        Get them out.
        A woman under Islam is a piece of property, like a cow. Something that is worth only 1/2 a man. Takes 2 men supporting a woman's case before a Shari'a court to give her standing. She is subject to genital mutilation, physical abuse, and honor killing, all without recourse against her family members. Why would a woman in the west want to subject herself to such treatment?
        Anytime you see a woman in the west in a hijab or burka, that is not a human being, but a slave, a piece of property. And, we allow that here?
        Britain has a choice. Either rid itself of the PC crap, or there will be no more Britain.
        German and France are almost as far gone as Sweden. At least Denmark is trying. Norway . . . no, but they will either figure it out, or die. Most are too far gone, and may not get out of the EU in time. Belgium is just nuts and destined for extinction.
        The liberal elite of Europe have pushed too far at Obama's urging, and the people of Europe will pay a horrible price for their "experiment". Civil war is Europe's future, and maybe, a Russian invasion.
        All in all, looks good for gold in the long run . . .
        Gun up, train, and be prepared. This President and his European cohorts have weakened the West.
        Meanwhile, PRK, PRC, Iran, and others are waiting.

    The number of Eurocrats rushing to proclaim the EU will survive and thrive is evidence that EU is mortally wounded. Denial is part of their nature and the reason they didn't see it coming. It is a syndrome shared by all the globalist elites, including the many in the U.S. Congress. I welcome the siren call!

    Freedom and liberty are for individuals and for nations. Thank God for the Brits with enough sense and guts to ignore the scare tactics of the politically powerful, the large banks and multinational corporations. Winston and Maggie would be proud of all of you Brexit warriors.

    Michael, as you mentioned, we've been shouting for years but, the eurocrats totally ignored us. The unelected dictatorial elite demanded vast sums of money from every country in Europe but, couldn't provide an audited set of accounts for nearly 20 years now! So much money is wasted and the elite live large at our expense. Over the years, a good trade idea has become political and that's not what any country in Europe has signed up for. Happily for the many, we have voted to leave the EU and, we may have just removed the first brick from the foundations which, over time, may cause the EU to crumble!

      I respectfully disagree that rejecting the EU is rejecting the 'socialist mindset of Europe'. I'm going to quote part of a good comment I read this morning:

      "This is the most anti-capitalist move I have ever seen. The EU is a conservative idea. Leaving it is a socialist one. It seems a lot of people are having a hard time with this concept. Anytime you are in favor of workers having more rights than their employers you are supporting a socialist cause. Putting up a wall and stopping immigrant labor is purely socialist and liberal. The EU is about strengthening businesses by allowing them to freely trade and gives them the ability to hire workers outside of their country to fill positions they might not have been able to fill otherwise. It also means the British can find work in other countries in the EU. They just slammed that door right on themselves."

      I also agree with Matt Redmond's comment below. NI and Scotland will be gone in 5-10 years. The UK will be just Wales and England.

      Also, how does this affect NATO's efficiency in Europe? A disrupted and splintering EU just plays right into Russia's hands. This is a geopolitical disaster in the making.

        You should read more. Conservatism has always been skeptical of capitalism and free trade. Try Irving Kristols book 'Two Cheers for Capitalism" for an example. And the left has favored trade and actually created "capitalism". The very term 'capitalism" was coined by Karl Marx, who also said the following: "The protective system in these days is conservative, while the free trade system works destructively. It breaks up old nationalities and carries antagonism of proletariat and bourgeoisie to the uttermost point. In this revolutionary sense alone, gentlemen, I am in favor of free trade."

        And, what was this EU becoming, other than a failed socialist state that is rotten to the core? Islam will turn on the globalists who are running the EU.
        Communists like Merkel think that they can control Islam when Islam abhors all of the socialist ideals like abortion, the assault on the family, and the lack of personal responsibility, the perversion. Islam will destroy Europe and there will be war for many, many years trying to remove the cancer that Islam represents.
        Leaving the EU is the first step to restoring sanity in Britain and returning control to the English.
        Scotland and Wales may leave, but it won't be to join the EU.
        I fear American blood will be shed to restore Europe, the historical Europe, or we will see the Russians roll in when the Muslims gain the upper hand in the EU.

      You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

      The main reasons for leaving were:

      a) People believed immigration into the UK would be reduced. Pro Brexit politicians are already back tracking on that.

      b) There is a democracy gap in the EU. People wanted to feel they were in control of their own country. They were anyway but that wasn't the perception of many people.

      No one complained about EU protection of workers rights.
      No one in Britain wants to get rid of the minimum wage.
      No one in Britain wants to get rid of the National Health Service.

    From my vantage point Brexit will toll the death of Great Britain. The Scot's and Northern Ireland will ,most likely, stay with the EU and separate form England. As an American of Irish descent I will celebrate when Northern Ireland merges with the Irish Republic and the island is once again whole and governed by the Irish people...

    I think if it had not been for the repeated Greek defaults and incompetent response to immigration the vote would have gone the other way. Some of the comment written by Ken has considerable merit, but the number of posts that reflect delusions are a disappointment. UK and US are not comparable. We're very, very different. Perhaps the largest issue was that two-bit countries (no offense intended, the cheese is very good) like Luxembourg and Liechtenstein had as much voting power as the serious players in the 27 (now 26) country parliament.
    I will be watching the outcomes and wish the Brits well. I do not want them to fail; democracy can't afford them to fail.

    Michael...all is not lost. 62% of Scotland voted to remain...and they will also be having a second referendum to break from GB. Yes! An independent Scotland is already speaking of EU support. Check out Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland.

    The Independence of Texas has been a growing movement for some years. I'm not saying I take it seriously but I also imagine there were quite a few Europeans who didn't take Brexit seriously too.

    The EU was the next to the last step in a grand scheme. The next step was to erase borders and to create a homogenous Europe. Unfortunately, nationalism, traditions, culture are a bit harder to eliminate than the socialist elite thought.
    Obama and Hillary destabilized Libya and Syria opening a conduit to Europe for Muslim migration. This was part of the grand scheme, because Islam was the medium to be used to scour away Faith, heritage, traditions, law, nationalism, and culture. Yet, for some reason, even the globist elite did not get that Muslims do not assimilate with the native population and that there is a strong imperative to seize control of dar al-Harb for Islam.
    At least the Brits now have a chance, if they will remove the PC blight from their law and language and allow an open and frank discussion of just what Islam is doing to the country. If they do that, Britain might stand for awhile longer. If they do not, and they continue allowing Islam an open door, Britain, the rest of Europe will disappear.
    Imagine. Islam with nuclear weapons--France and Britain.

    I am an American resident in the British Isles (not part
    of U.K.) and have observed the Brexit process from the distance of a three hour ferry voyage.

    The Brexit success is HUGE in its' implications for Europe and a procedure we Americans need to study in depth. Conservative and Labour Party voters both
    supported "Leave". This was a spontaneous revulsion
    to being manipulated by unelected faceless bureaucrats in Brussels, and paying for the privilege.

    Donald Trump, in Scotland for the opening of a golf course, said that Brexit Leave voters shared the same concerns as those Americans who have caused his
    rise in the polls.

    I texted a local radio talk program; "This is the greatest
    day for Britain since 1945. Stand proud - liberty wins."

      One correction, both Labour, Liberal and conservative parties supported remain. Within parties all MP's were allowed to campaign for their own beliefs. I think the parties did not realise the grass roots feeling outside London for leave. Scotland followed the direction of Nicola Sturgeon to remain. I would not bet on Scotland leaving the UK just yet either. N. Ireland joining with Eire is a big question mark as well. I have lived through the troubles and could easily see the Protestants taking a great dislike to any attempt to join them into a one Ireland.

      C. McCarty is right. The BREXIT vote "is the greatest day for Britain since 1945."

      As she did in 1945, Britain has struck back and freed itself from German imperialism.

      Because that's all the EU really is. To quote Peter Hitchens: "The German Empire by another name".

      As for talk of Scotland wanting to split from Britain and "stay" with the EU ... let's wait until the domino effect of BREXIT plays out across Europe and see if they still want to "stay" with the EU.

    I visited England in 1969 as a student, about 5 years before Great Britain's entry into the EU. I recall vividly how the proposal being debated to possibly enter the EU was being discussed in a seminar with government leaders and economists. I was left with the strong impression that the English would later regret it if they did enter the EU. I'm sorry to say that feeling was right. 40 years of a bad marriage with Europe is not enough reason to stay. Isn't it about time that we in the U.S. also say we're fed up with globalism, and do something about it as well? :-*

    It's really quite elementary. When Britain joined the EU they surrendered part of their sovereignty. What followed was micro-management by unelected bureaucrats. Petty things like the size, shape and colour of fruit and vegetables. No British pippin apples because they were considered too small for market. It never occurred to these geniuses to let the customer decide whether to buy them or not. Then there was a fine for selling anything using the centuries old English weights and measures. Nope, it all has to be by the metric system.
    So, for surrendering a part of their sovereignty, what did the UK get in return? Paying a major part of the EU's budget. OK, you're going to annoy the hell out of us and we'll fund your idiot bureaucrats. Not a good Deal !!!!
    Sovereignty is serious business. There's personal sovereignty which is why we have locks on our doors and a gun under the bed, and there's national sovereignty. Neither of which should be surrendered.

    Michael it's not only Britishs who are fed up wit EU, it's the majority of european people. EU has become a sort of undemocratic, deaf to the peoples voice thing. Decisions are made in Brussels by highly paid representatives. Lobbies reign in the place and guys in charge are crooks (Baroso and now Junker). Countries need an harmonious collaboration, not a technocratic dictature !

    The Globalists are mortally wounded. They're the same bunch to whom Obama answers. Can one think of any other reason an American President would go preach unity on behalf of the EU?

    The EU is a faceless beurocracy that answers to no one. They write regulations and laws without the consensus of the people. It is a tyranacle institution.

    I say bully for Great Briton. Let the chips fall as they may. And fall they will. Cheerio!

    I wonder how would the Americans feel, if comrade Vladimir steps in Brussels to fill the gap (to be) left after Brexit (aka 'well, I'm still alive anyway' as quoted by Her Majesty QE2), by extending the EU up to the Pacific Ocean (i.e. incl. "Russian Far East")! A possible... "Euro-Asian Union" nightmare?

        The Titanic never sank! (see Robin Gardiner's book, "The Ship (Titanic) That Never Sank?". FYI... The ship that sank was in fact Titanic's sister ship Olympic, disguised as Titanic, as an insurance scam by her owners, the International Mercantile Marine Group, controlled by American (OMG!) financier J.P. Morgan that had acquired the White Star Line in 1902 (Wikipedia).

        Meanwhile, we - simply - "wait and see" the... "sinking process" and listening to the (2010) hardrock blasting sounds of... Jettblack 'Get Your Hands Dirty'... hahaha!
