Michael's Dispatches

An Open Offer to U.S. Senators

Whatever we do in Iraq from here forward, we must strive to make better decisions than those made between 2003 and 2006. And one way to achieve that is by making certain that our civilian leaders are fully informed. All three candidates for President are extremely intelligent, but that doesn't mean that all three are tracking the truth on the ground in Iraq. Anyone who wants to be President of the United States needs to see Iraq without the distorting lenses of the media or partisan politics. I would be honored to visit Iraq with Senator Obama, Senator Clinton, Senator McCain or any of their Senate colleagues.

I hereby offer to accompany any Senator to Iraq, whether they are pro-or anti-war, Democrat or Republican. I will make this offer personally to a few select Senators as well. Our conversations during the visit would be on- or off-record, as they wish. Touring Iraq with me, as well as briefings by U.S. officers and meetings with Iraqis, would provide an accurate and nuanced account of the progress and challenges ahead, so that the Senators might have a highly informed perspective on this most critical issue. Our civilian leaders need to make decisions based on the best information available. The only way to learn what is really going on in Iraq is to go there and listen to our ground commanders, who know what they are doing. Generals Petraeus and Odierno have years of experience in Iraq, and vast knowledge of our efforts there. But the young soldiers who have done multiple tours in Iraq also have unique and invaluable perspectives as well. These young soldiers have personally witnessed the trajectory of the war shift dramatically, and can articulate those changes in concrete and specific terms. It doesn’t matter if a soldier is only twenty-something. If he or she spent two or three years in the war, that person is likely to have valuable insights. The best way to understand what is really going on is to listen closely to a wide range of service members who have done multiple tours in Iraq. Some will be negative, some will be positive, but overall I am certain that the vast majority of multi-tour Iraq veterans will testify that there has been great progress, and now there is hope. Combat veterans don’t tolerate happy talk or wishful thinking. They’ll tell you the raw truth as they see it.

Whether any Senators take advantage of my offer, I do hope that the presidential candidates visit Iraq, not just for a photo opportunity, but to spend time with our commanders and combat veterans, who know the truth and are not afraid to speak it.

    Michael,
I'm sure you meant, a few select "representatives" as well.

How tempting it must be to take Nancy Pelosi down range and leave her there.

Thank you for telling it like it is. I have struggled finding good sources of current information about the war. Getting updates from your site has been eye opening and inspiring.

I hope all of those politicians who claim to honor our troops will have the honor to be get and stay informed and sincerely use their power and influence to improve the lives of Iraqis and our soldiers. The mixing of politics and war has been disastrous so far. It is amazing what our troops are doing overseas. God bless.

Most of the politicians in Congress are totally unwilling to see the truth in either Iraq or America. They continue to pander to populist, Marxist and plain, old BDS factions.

Seeing Truth and hard, factual Reality are not on their agenda, as that could make them doubt their irrational, emotional world view. They continue to cling to power and perqs because they think they're somehow "above" the unwashed masses they claim to represent.

They also think their power enables them to "command" the economy when the only command economies of the past 100 years (Communist, Marxist, or Socialist) all have failed. Even the thick-headed Swedes are moving away from Socialism, yet our politicians continue to rail against the "wealth gap" "redistribution of wealth," and "fairness."

Talk to any soldier about the Veterans Affairs system and you'll find a compelling argument AGAINST government-run health care. Look at any government bureaucracy and you'll find an argument for REPEALING most laws regulating business.

Big government means big power for the corrupt lifers in Congress sucking at the taxpayers' teats. That's all politicians want. They don't want any dose of reality that a trip to Iraq offers.

This is what i think: the army was unable to access the true experts in the tiype warfare indicated after 2003 because of prejudices and institutional thinking. Gen Petraeus somehow put it all together and sold it. i believe that President Bush and Secdef Rumsfeld were mislead by the army establishment and because they had been trained to defer to the military by Presidents Johnson and Nixon they swallowed the party line. even as Casey and Abizaid were leaving they were speaking ill of the "surge", not exactly playing for the team. McCain was correct to vote to not confirm Casey as Cheif of Staff.
this is what else i think: they are getting it right at last with Petraeus and Odierno still in the traces but at a higher level. if these guys can keep their eye on the prize we will succeed.
this is what i know: Yon and his SF background knows all the above and has the honor with which to do his duty.

    Michael:

Just finished your book and believe it to be the best in presenting the story of the trials and triumphs of our fabulous military in Iraq. Thank you for your courage and honesty in seeking out and presenting the clearest picture we have of this campaign. You're my hero!

I would appreciate your guidance in how to identify mailing address of service members in Iraq. Perhaps the Deuce Four? My four kids and eight grandchildren would like to mount a campaign to send gift baskets and cards to these increidble young Americans. Do you have any suggestions for items to send in the gift boxes?

Keep up the great work, and I eagerly look foreward to your next book.

...was part of the problem. He kept information from the president from what I have learned and Colin Powell was purposely left out of the loop when big decisions were made. Condi Rice was not stout enough to stand up to those bulldogs; Cheney and Rumsfeld, to ensure that the president got the information that he needed from the military and they ran past her to keep Powel in to loop.
I know my information is limited but there is a reason why Rumsfeld is gone now. It wasn't because he wanted to go fishing.
Sadly enough I am sure we all give Mr. Yon a better picture of how uninformed the American public really is about this war.

The winds of time have blown my heart away,
Yesterdays have I in plenty, tomorrows few, if any.
But, just once, before I bear the burden of the Shroud,
I'd like to see us win, and, still be proud.

Thank you, Michael for telling the story of this war without trying to fit it into someone's agenda.

Obama was there once before the surge. He's refusing to go again even though McCain, who has been to Iraq several times, is challenging him to go to Iraq together and meet with Petraeus and Crocker. The Libtards do not want to hear the truth.

I do hope that some of them take you up on your offer. You would make an excellent guide.

Here's what I said on my not heavily trafficked blog about your book:

recieved my copy of MOMENT OF TRUTH IN IRAQ written by Michael Yon the blogger who has been embedded with troops in Iraq more than any other. I higly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the Iraq war. Michael Yon does a great job telling what went right, what went wrong and how things are going right again. He pulls no punches.

He also tells how General David Petraeus had it right from the start. Petraeus was in charge in 2003 of Ninevah Province which has it's capital in Mosul. Petraeus discovered that Mosul was home to a large number of retired Iraqi generals. He organized a regular Tuesday meeting with 40 of these generals to get Mosul up and running as quickly as possible all before Paul Bremer arrived in Iraq and fucked things up.

This will be one of the most important books written about the Iraq war and more importantly about American values.

I remember reading much about the 1920 martyr brigade from Iraq many years ago, and that they began to fight with the U.S. soldiers to root out Al Quida. I haven't read or heard anything about them in a long time, and just wondering if you have any updates about them. Thanks for your time...Todd

Way to go Michael! Way to go! I am not pessimistic about your proposal. I suspect that a lot of Senators know who you are and will get the message. It should be mandatory for our leaders to make regular evaluation trips to a war zone wherever it might be. Why does it seem that the "commoners" seem to be more willing?
Received the following from a friend and am passing it on:
What is a Veteran? A Veteran, whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve - is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a check made payable to the United States of America, for an amount up to, and including his life.
That is honor and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

    Michael,
Thank you so much for what you are doing and for keeping us informed on what is really
going on over in Iraq. Your offer to Senators is a gracious one but one that I don't believe
would happen. After seeing the Senate hearings with General Petraeus and how he was treated
by the Senators, I don't think it matters to them that we are winning. If they saw proof of it themselves they
would still deny that we are winning. There treatment of General Petraeus was so dispicable, and I won't
ever forget that. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for putting your huge heart into the cause of victory over the terrorist in Iraq. I think you are the best among the handful of honest journalists who have gone to the front lines in Iraq and lived and experience OIF through the eyes of our amazing warriors as well as ordinary Iraqis.

If it hadn't been for patriots like you, willing to risk your life to bring forth your complete story about the war in Iraq (the GOOD as well as the bad and the ugly), I'm afraid that the seditious actions of the radical left, which has infiltrated and now dominates main stream media and the Democrat party, would have so eviscerated public support for OIF that leftist members of Congress would have by now recreated another Vietnam-like surrender, with all of its subsequent catastrophic consequences, including the slaughter of good Iraqis by the Islamist murder monkeys (as Chris Plante properly calls them).

And thanks for your excellent book "Moment of Truth in Iraq," which I'm finishing now.

    Michael,

I've been reading your dispatches since Gates Of Fire. I've also heard you interviewed on radio with on PUNDIT REVIEW and MICHAEL GRAHAM. Over the years I've learned a lot about Iraq from Iraqi blogs, and of course, from your dispatches. While I might have learned more about Iraq than the TYPICAL American, I still don't know squat. Judging by their public announcements, neither do many Senators.

One thing I've learned about Iraqi people, they appear to be quite different than how they are perceived and portrayed in the MSM. I'm hoping you get a positive response from your open letter.

    Hello Michael,

Wonderful letter of challenge to the candidates. Of course we know that in the instance of one candidate, Mr. McCain-it is probably not necessary as he has been fully engaged in understanding the nature, import, and how critical our success in Iraq is. For that he is being defined and presented by Obama as running for a Bush 3rd term. So be it. I just hope that the American people can figure out that political courage is more important a qualification than how well a guy fills out an empty suit, or how many women faint at a campaign rally. The fact that some who seek the highest office in the land, (Mr. Barack Hussein Obama) would seek that office with a policy that could reverse everything accomplished and sacrificed by our brave men and women based upon perceptions formed 3-4 years ago on their ONE close-minded visit, is abhorrent to me.

Hopefully, they will all put America before politics and take you up on your offer with their "willing suspension of disbelief" just long enough to find the truth.

God Bless Michael, thank our troops and give them a big SALUTE for me. I gobbled up your book already, Great job!

Come on Michael, do you really think you aren't 'the distorting lenses of the media' too? And let's not ignore the fact that any of these polititians will require tons of security, which is another distorting lense. (remember McCain's stroll through the market? Or Bush's quick in-and-out's?) Then there's the General's; think they'd like to get in a word with them too?

There is no such thing as absolute truth. One has to take information from many sources and try to synthesize one's own 'truths'. Polititions have better access, and I'd hope they use it.

I love your writing and admire your intimacy with our brave soldiers, but sorry; I take your words with a grain of salt too.

    KenE writes:
"There is no such thing as absolute truth."

Really?? You 've just made an absolute statement. You've contradicted yourself by stating YOUR absolute truth, albeit a false truth.

The Sun Rises in the East and sets in the West. Absolute Truth!!
    1 + 1 =2 Absolute Truth !!
Muslim extremists are hellbent on bringing Jihad to the West. Absolute Truth!!

Care to make any more assertions, Ken, about the 'non existence" of absolute truth?

"One has to take information from many sources and try to synthesize one's own 'truths'".
Ahhhh Ken.....Spoken like the true lover of relativism that you are: Everyone creates their own truths and by fiat their own reality.

    Ken also writes
"I love your writing and admire your intimacy with our brave soldiers, but sorry; I take your words with a grain of salt too."

How can you admire " Michael's intimacy with our brave soldiers" if you take his words with a grain of salt??The only way can come know of Michaels relationship with our brave soldiers is by HIS OWN WORDS.
Words you take with a grain of salt!

The trouble is, Michael, that a lot of House Members and Senators HAVE gone to Iraq. But when they go, they often don't process the information they get properly. They go there with preconceived notions, and their brains lock in on every nugget that reinforces their preconceptions, and they automatically tune out all contradictory information. So they come back only reinforced in the ideas they came in with. If you do get a chance to go with Members, I would recommend you focus extra attention to point out things that contradict what they already believe, everytime an opportunity arises. That way, they may actually learn something.

By all means Mike--do it. By the way, AVN, I'm sure most if not all of the politicians you refer to have not gone to Iraq with Michael Yon; it's perfectly easy to arrange a trip to see only what you want to when you have millions of dollars. This means that they could choose to see only the things that they can use to blow up their political agenda.
Mr Yon, I hope and pray that at least one politician will take up your offer. If not, it could mean they don't care to hear the truth. God bless you and take it easy.

....because they can't. (Part 1 of 2) Their philosophy prohibits them from seeing anything other than failure. The reason the Democrats (who are mostly Modern Liberals these days) seem to want us to lose is they really do want us to lose.

Their philosophy is driven around a Utopia where there is no fighting, arguing, poverty, injustice, etc. When the anti-war people use the word ƒ??peaceƒ?, this is what they mean. (If the war ended tomorrow, they would still be angry.) The problem is the only way to get to this Utopia is to specifically ignore and actually fight all of the tools that normal people use to get better: morals, ethics and rational thinking. (Keep going, it took me awhile to get it.)

The easiest way to see all of this is in how they judge bad behavior: they canƒ??t. If they do judge, then that pulls them away from the Utopia. So Militant Islam is ignored. Terrorists become ƒ??extremistsƒ? ƒ?? since both sides have extremists (makes things equal.)

But they do need a way to explain things. This is where victims come in. The weak or failures are victims. Thinking of the poor, when have you seen liberals work to make the poor richer. They donƒ??t. Itƒ??s always about finding ways to make the rich more poor and the saying that the poor are victims of the rich.

Whatever the Palestinians do is ignored or, if they canƒ??t ignore it, they blame it on the Israelis. The grand fallback position is racism. If all else fails, then racism is the reason for differences. (See part 2 for the rest).

This same strange thinking envelopes everything they do. Whether were talking about education, healthcare, energy, etc., the Modern Liberals always take the side that is wrong. In the video, ƒ??HOW MODERN LIBERALS THINKƒ?, which Iƒ??ll reference at the end, Evan Sayet says that Modern Liberals tear down what is good, successful and right while elevating what is evil, failed and wrong, so we come together in the middle and there is nothing to fight over. Once you understand all of this, itƒ??s simple and you can spot it in all sorts of places. Just read AP stories on major issues and youƒ??ll spot this thinking. (Just today, I saw that Jim McKay died and I was reading about the Munich Olympics at Wikipedia. The head of the Olympic committee didnƒ??t want to mention the dead Israeliƒ??s at a memorial soon after the massacre because it might offend people. This strange philosophy is everywhere!)

So back to Michaelƒ??s attempt to convince members of Congress. Those members that have been sucked into this Modern Liberalism wonƒ??t be receptive because they canƒ??t be receptive. No matter how sincere Michael is and no matter how much time he spends explaining things with facts, the Modern Liberals will be oblivious to it. As Evan says in the video, itƒ??s like someone trying to explain Hitlerƒ??s Social Security program to us. We wouldnƒ??t care and couldnƒ??t care because of Hitlerƒ??s overwhelming evil. To Modern Liberals, anything other than actions that lead to the Utopia are treated the same way: theyƒ??re ignored. Watch the video.

Here is the link to the video ƒ??HOW MODERN LIBERALS THINKƒ?. Youƒ??ll need some quiet time, but it is well worth it. Iƒ??ve watched parts of it many, many times now.

"listen to our ground commanders" ? I don't think so. One of the major hurdles to this idea is that there is a significant majority of the body politic that are ironically, antiestablishment. Their view of members of the military fall into two categories. One, the ridiculous caricature of a general from the movie "Dr. Strange Love" and the other is the racist-redneck-trigger-happy-psychopathic-killer-Jr. Enlisted guy or the poƒ?? black boy who couldnƒ??t afford shoes so he done got tricked into dying foƒ?? the white-manƒ??s cause. If you donƒ??t agree, look at some of the comments that John Kerry made or just read a little in the Daily Kos.

The problem is not that they donƒ??t have the information but itƒ??s that their filter that they use when viewing the world is so vastly different from the rest of us (military folks and Yon readers and the like). No, you would have to readjust their entire world view before they can see the truth in Iraq. They donƒ??t trust the military and the military population makes them nervous (just like social justice professors at UC Berkeley make me nervous).

This being said, I hope someone takes you up on their offer. But Iƒ??m not going to hold my breath.

      Good luck Mr. Yon

I think I understand what Ken E is saying.

And I'll use the mistakes made during the Bremer 'ViceRoy-ship' as the point made.

The withdrawal into a bunker mentality, during a time when we should have actually built on experiences gleened and blogged on early by several mid-level officers who really DID incorporate Petraeus' co-in tactics prove the point.

But I also disagree with Ken because he has to go to specific incidents and areas in order to illustrate. It's the BIG picture that counts.

I have been reading Yon for years and he is the only blogger that I felt compelled to donate money to. Why? Because he puts a brain on the sense that is connected to a set of open eyes. Many may discount him being embedded with American troops as a distorting place of perspective but it beats the hell out of the lounge of some hotel in the green zone or worse yet finding your journalistic wisdom in some cocktail party in D.C. This man is as close to a genuine Ernie Pyle as we can have in our world. I absolutely with a passion hate the distrust and disinformation I feel bombarded with from all sides. Yon speaks for Yon and does so with an honest and humble this is what I see and think voice. Not a stoolie for anybody. IMHO.

      #26, #35. Huntress, pettyfog;
It's not philosophy, it's tactics. A standard ploy of the left is to hold up some arbitrary absolute ideal, observe you're not meeting it, and deny you any right to act with justification until that standard is met. The most common instance is, "But there are/were many tyrannies in the world; howcum you just fixed Saddam? Huh? Why not Kim, Mugabe, ..., etc. So you should have left Saddam alone! We could have waited till he ran out of steam!"

It's called "making the perfect the enemy of the good." ==} 'Since the absolute God's-eye truth is unknowable to mere humans, there's no point in observing and gathering data. Just trust The Narrativeƒ?› and all will be well.' {==

So the only answer to the Kens is, "Yeah, well, we're only human, unlike you, so we do the best we can. Sod off."

If Obama wants to 'man up' on Iraq, he'd take you up on this one. Of course, he would risk getting a bunch of fantasies shattered; after all, this guy voted to defund the troops in the field.

McCain could use the ground level view as well, primarily to learn about the complexities of dealing with the Iraqi people. Frankly, a joint visit with both of them would be ideal, but Obama wouldn't do that, since that is precisely what McCain suggested.

Been a reader since long before Gates of Fire, Michael; I envy the Senators the offer and opportunity.

This is a good idea. I hope you get some takers on your offer.

Tangentially though, I wish you'd remove the phrase stating that we had "no reconstruction plan". Of course we did - spend $15 billion fixing the infrastructure, employing massive amounts of people, spurring the economy, and improving the lives of impoverished Iraqis, many of whom had been living in and around streams of open sewage for a decade. As you know, it worked quite well in Kurdistan, but exceptionally poorly in other areas, primarily because of the jihadis and insurgents equal and opposite DEconstruction plans.

So it sadly did not go according to plan. But we had a plan. And it even sounded reasonable to most Westerners. Remember, the Japanese and Germans in general accepted quite a similar plan, and we're all pals today.

      Michael,
I disagree on just a couple of points:
The intelligence was NOT shoddy. Sadaam Hussein was a WMD-wielding, terrorist supporting, megalomaniac. He was just one of the threats to U.S. forces in th region. I'm an Iraq War vet, and I'm damned glad we took out the sonofabitch along with the Al Qaeda and taliban in Afghanistan. BTW: We found WMDs not yet discovered by U.N. inspectors.
The reconstruction was slow in coming (we had to wait unil the fighting subsided) but the infrastructure, to include government and economic, progressed faster than the media gave credit. The "insurgency" consisted mostly of terrorists coming in from Syria, North Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and elsewhere in the Middle East. In other words, the same places that breed, fund, and train them. The 'collapse into anarchy and civil war' that Pelosi, Reid, and company salivated for, never quite took hold.

Don't hold your breath for a masive turnout of democrats in response to your invitation. They've gone from pro-terrorist/defeatist propaganda to scant coverage, to lame excuses, and finally, grudging respect. There's still a number of them who want to get out of the war on Islamofascism before they finally have to admit we've won.

That's the raw truth as I see it.

No senator will take you up on your offer. The war became a means to an end for one party to dislodge another from power. No need to interject facts into the argument.

Part of Europe (Germany, France and Russia) were content implementing economic colonialism through the oil for food program. The US upset that program by being simplistic enough to attack and remove a tyrant.

Durbin, Kennedy, Kerry, Murtha and others certainly have American blood on their hands due to their anti troop rhetoric that fed the young islamic men to travel to Iraq and fight the invader. Those comments were mainly designed to sour the American public on the war in order to install their party into power for whatever their agenda will be.

You hear liberals crying free Tabet. It would appear that approximately 25 million souls have been freed from a tyrant in Iraq. A tyrant that was allowed to be in power due to cold war politics. Why is freeing Tabet any different than freeing Iraq? I am not aware of anyone ever being freed from tryranny whether neighborhood gang tyrants or regional world tyrants without someone being prepared to and actually shedding blood.

The British and American military have without doubt proven that they are most likely the only entities on earth that have any credibility to free people from tyranny and having no desire to prophet from their act.

Thanks Michael for what you do to report the truth and for allowing a forum for others of us to comment.

Pelosi and Reid should be ordered to go with you, by the president, wouldn't that be a HOOT!

Osama Obama (Ted Kennedy's words, not mine) is still saying he will withdraw all troops from Iraq and send them to Afghanistan. He needs the Iraqi tour more than any of them, he's running for the Commander In Chief's position, for cryin' out loud! He won't take you up on it and you can count on that!

I really believe we need to give Pakistan an altimatum to clean out the al Qaeda and Taliban training camps and the rebel leaders that they fear, or the Americans and British will do it for them, no choice.

Thanks again Michael for putting your life on hold and yourself in harms way, just so you can report the truth about what our military is accomplishing. I can't begin to tell you how much that has meant to the American people and other countries that are able to read your posts.

Some no name British actor has been bad mouthing the British soldiers in Iraq for whining, he says. He should be ordered to the front and embed with them, then we would hear who the wimp really is. Unbelievable!

God's speed son! Thank you for your service! Thank our military for their servce.

Mercy, I would sure take you up on your offer, if I was able.

That would be an educational and enlightening experience, not only to see the culture, but also to talk with our warriors and others who are on the ground.

Please keep us informed on this offer and see if you have any takers. You will find out very shortly who are the talkers and who are those who are dedicated and desire the truth.

      All the best, stay frosty.

Below is the text of an email I just sent to my senator, Gordon Smith of Oregon.

      Senator Smith,

I just saw your new ad with the two Democrats. As an active Republican and a U.S. Army veteran, I find it offensive that they praise you for opposing the new strategy in Iraq that is now winning that war. I donƒ??t know what your current thinking is on the war, but I respectfully suggest that you go to Michael Yonƒ??s excellent site to get accurate information about what is really happening on the ground there. Mr. Yon also has an open invitation to any U.S. Senators to go to Iraq and be accompanied by him to gather factual information to inform policy on the war. If you donƒ??t already know of Michael Yon and his reporting, it isnƒ??t surprising that you have been misinformed.

At this moment, I continue to think that you are a man of honor for whom facts and evidence make a difference. In the name of my brothers and sisters in uniform, I ask that you read through the archives of Yonƒ??s reports. One side canƒ??t just ƒ??endƒ? the war. That is a euphemism for defeat. The consequences of defeat in Iraq will be enormous. After years of mismanagement, we are finally carrying out a winning strategy. Donƒ??t be a part of stealing from our troops, the victory they are winning for us.

I am providing a link to his site for your convenience.

I hope he has the cojones to take up your offer.
